Night Watch

Years ago I learned the splendor of rising early. I find when things are most still and quiet it is then when God’s handiwork speaks the loudest and is the most obvious. This day I was greeted with God’s sentinel in the sky pictured above. Reflecting the sun’s light from the other side of the world this object that is normally dark and grey during the day now casts a portrait of colors and shades in the clouds as my morning wake-up call. Only the Creator can make the inanimate come alive. This day at this moment one can feel that this scene is a personal message communicating that this day is a day of possibilities for us. This day we can go once again in the grace of God and experience all that He has planned for us. It is no wonder the Psalmist says “In the morning, O Lord, You will hear my voice; In the morning I will order my prayer to You and eagerly watch.” (Psalm 5:3) What if more of us started our day like this? What if more families started their days like this? What if more of those appointed to preserve and protect us started their day like this? What if those we have elected to govern our country started their day like this? Maybe we all would be a little more patient. Maybe our discourse would be a little more gentle and kind. But we can’t change the world. Funny thing is no one has asked us to change the world. God only suggests we might try to change ourselves a little bit. “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened and I will give you rest.” (Mathew 11:28)(NIV) I have found over the years that it is in these quiet morning moments that my faith comes alive. It is one of those times when our faith moves from information only to an experience with God. I have found over the years that a moment like this in the early morning fuels my faith all day long. These days I no longer have to rise early to get a jump on traffic or meet the challenges of the day. But some days I still choose to rise early, not because I have to but because I want to. Funny thing is God still shows up. Pretty sweet deal.
