Alcatraz Island

Alcatraz Island, located 1.25 miles offshore in the San Francisco Bay, was initially known as Fort Alcatraz, The island was first used as a U.S. Military reservation and later as a prison to house Civil War Confederate sympathizers. It is perhaps most famous for being designated as a Federal Prison in 1933 and housing the hardest criminals like Al Capone, George “Machine Gun” Kelly, and the “Birdman of Alcatraz” Robert Franklin Stroud. Now it stands as a memorial of man’s cruelty to man with its crowded cell blocks, solitary confinement areas, and isolation; it is unescapable because of its surrounding, swirling ocean currents at freezing temperatures. It is a picture of hopelessness surrounded by some of God’s most beautiful creation. This picture says to me that no matter how we stand in the eyes of man, God’s grace and beauty surround us. All we have to do is “see it” through eyes of faith.
